The One without Shopping

A few weeks ago, I mentioned a shopping fast, and I thought that maybe it deserved some follow up, for accountability if nothing else.

The shopping fast has two main purposes:  to reduce spending and to help me become more conscious in my wardrobe choices.  The first reason will help me be more disciplined in my overall spending (I either do all of the shopping or none of the shopping, sort of the same as eating cookies).  The second reason for the shopping fast really goes back to wanted a simpler lifestyle.  I have given up purchasing items for my wardrobe (basically, anything that I can wear) from mid-March until my birthday in mid-September.  That’s six whole months for you non-math people, and it’s going to be quite a challenge.

The first month and change has been a busy one, with work and traveling, which makes it a lot easier for me to avoid unnecessary shopping.  I’m already much more able to identify things that I don’t wear and actual needs in my wardrobe.

In total honesty, I probably think way too much about all of this – what clothes say about a person and what minimalism looks like and really just appearance in general.  But what I don’t want is to become a slave to these things or my appearance.  By enforcing discipline even into these seemingly trivial corners of my life, I can take firm control over these things rather than letting them control me.  I can express myself through fashion without living for it, like being in the world but not of it.  And if any of this resonates with you, join me in my shopping fast!  We can be partners if you’d like.  Your wallet and your wardrobe will definitely thank you.
