The cold and rain is back and I love it all. The sweaters, fuzzy socks, hot tea, and the wellies that accidentally tore over the weekend but that Zappos is replacing within 24 hours.
The warm season of togetherness is upon us, and my excitement is bittersweet. I love the decorations and the sights and smells. But my people aren’t here. My family is spread out along the east coast, and it takes a lot of work to get from one end to the other, you know? And if I had to choose between the decorations and my people, well the choice is obvious. It’s just that time of year when you want to be surrounded by family and friends. It’s our gut instinct. When the weather gets cold, we head indoors to snuggle around the fireplace with our people. It’s this instinct that made me so homesick my last month in Denmark. It’s the same instinct that makes me want to gather up all of my favorite people and lock them in one place for the next two months and feed them cookies and cocoa. But since everyone is everywhere, and there’s work to be done and life to be lived, we settle for phone calls and face time and soak up every last second of togetherness that we get. Let’s savor those moments, and cherish those people, because this season will go all too quickly. And I’m not ready for 2014 quite yet.
